Teaching Numbers 1-5 for very young learners (4-5 years old)




Wamer: TPR
  1. Have Ss to sit in a circle, have them to listen and do your instructions.
  2. Instructions: Stand up, sit down, show one finger, point to … (objects in the classroom), stand up, walk slowly around the class, run around the class, sit down

Presenting the numbers:
  1. Have Ss to sit in a circle, have them to listen, look and say.
  2. Show the flashcards and ask, “What number is it?”
  3. Have to answer in a full sentence, ‘It’s number …. Give them a high five then move to the next number.
  4. Do it in an interesting and in a fast pace so they won’t be bored.

Teacher to students Drill: Hands up and touch
  1. Put the flashcards on a big table, have Ss to stand around the table.
  2. Have Ss to ask, listen, touch and say.
  3. Ask Ss to put their hands up.
  4. Have Ss to ask, “What number is it?”
  5. Say the number then Ss need to touch the correct number and say “It’s ….”
  6. Give praise or high five every time they finish doing it.
  7. Repeat until you think that Ss could memorize the numbers.

Students to students Drill: Teacher and student role-play

  1. Prepare small flashcards for every pair.
  2. Have every pair to stand up face to face. Put flashcards in order on the floor.
  3. Ss A will act as the teachers and Ss B will act as the students.
  4. Ss A ask, “What number is it?” and Ss B answer, “It’s number ….”
  5. Ss ask and answer for all numbers on the flashcards then Ss change role.
 Practice: Give every s the handout and ask them to count and match.

Controlled Communicative Practice: Roll – ask – answer

  1. Dive Ss into pairs. Give the handout.
  2. Ask one of the ss to roll the die and ask his/her friend. Then other s needs to answer. Ss mark the box they have answered.
  3. Ss do this in turn.
